Late Shri.Gangadharao Ogale Founder Member of Sakhar Kamgar Hospital Trust

Our Founder

At the outset, let us introduce ourselves. We represent a charitable hospital situated in Shrirampur, a taluka place in Ahmednagar District of Maharashtra.

We would like to tell you about our institution; for which we have to shuffle few pages of history. The history dates back to sixties During those days, there were sugar factories, running well, where in lot many workers were employed. With an intention of safeguarding worker’s interests, a union came into existence, which was named as Sakhar Kamgar Sabha, Shrirampur. The members under able & dynamic leadership of Late Gangadharrao Ogale, realized the need of a hospital for workers & their families; since the medical facilities available then were very scanty. It was going to be a hospital, by the workers, for the workers.

Fascinated with this idea, Shri Ogale left no stone unturned to raise funds, for the proposed hospital. All workers contributed from their salaries. Shri Ogale appealed to national & international organizations to donate generously for this noble cause. After untiring efforts of Shri Ogale & his colleagues, their dream came into reality. The foundation stone of this hospital was laid by noted labour leader Smt. Maniben Kara on the auspicious day, 15th August 1962. The construction was completed within 3 years and the hospital was inaugurated on 29th October 1965 at the hands of the then Governer of Maharashtra State, his Excellency Dr. P.V.Cherian. In this inaugural add address Dr. Cherian said.

"As a Medical man, I am aware of the difficulties in starting an institution of this kind, As an Administrator; I visualize the immense energy and organization that should have gone into it. As a citizen, I can form an idea of the intensity of the faith of Mr. Ogale and his colleagues, which Called forth the sustained cooperation of individuals and institutions for making their dream true. I learn that this is the first hospital to be started by a Labour Union all by itself in this part of the world. You have blazed a trial, which in years to come may be trodden by other similar organizations.""

Dr. Cherian, continued to guide the managing committee, for a long time thereafter we must humbly mention that the hospital is indented to many international organizations & trade unions who donated generously in cash or king. To name a few, those were Automobile worker’s Union, Washington. The Austrian Federation of Trade Unions. The American Peace Corps volunteers etc.

Since its inception, to this date, the hospital is providing medical services to the people, at the very reasonable rates. We are particularly keen in helping poor & needy class of the society irrespective of cast and creed Over years, the hospital is progressing steadily & enjoying increasing reputation specifically in the “have-nots” class of the society.

As on today, we feel proud to state that we have a 150 beded, well equipped hospital with a state-of-the-art, operation theatre where all major/minor surgical procedures are carried out. The well-equipped I.CU. which was started in 2005, is yet another feather in our cap. Now we can accommodate 100-110 indoor patients & the average occupancy is 90% round the clock. We have 14 special rooms for the affording class of the society. All other beds are meant for poor patients. Many poor patients are treated totally free of cost. No patient is ever denied treatment; just because he cannot afford it.
